Sugartown - Carlow Arts Festival
SUGARTOWN is a distinct and unique project which began in 2018 and continues into 2019 for presentation as a large-scale spectacle event led by internationally renowned director of the Aarhus European City of Culture closing ceremony, Dina Abu Hamden.
Following a year-long collaboration with the people and communities of Carlow, the narrative has come to life through stories and memories of Carlow’s recent past, real-life characters, and images.
Featuring live music, choirs, and dance, SUGARTOWN is a universal story of people who are in love with their land and determined to carry on. It features professional and community performers, including the Carlow Choral Society under the direction of music director Blanaid Murphy, Carlow College of Music, Aspiro, Take A Part Carlow’s Let Loose Youth Group, members of Music Generation Carlow, Byrneside Eurocyl, Ballet Barn, County Carlow Youth Theatre, Dance Republic, the award-winning local uillean piper Colm Broderick, and many more local and national artists and contributors.
Of course it would not be Saturday night at Carlow Arts Festival without fireworks. SUGARTOWN is sure to finish with an epic bang.
SUGARTOWN takes place as part of the Carlow Arts Festival 2019.
This project is supported by the Creative Ireland Carlow Open Call 2018/19.
