Offaly

Culture and Creativity Strategy 2018-2022

A stronghold of Irish vision and innovation, Offaly has deep roots in arts, science, history and heritage, and for centuries has given rise to some of the most enduring works of creativity to come out of Ireland.

Offaly is home to the early Christian monastic settlement at Clonmacnoise, the stunning Slieve Bloom mountains, the Sculpture in the Parklands in the wilderness of Lough Boora, and to Birr Castle, best known for its Leviathan of Parsonstown, once the largest telescope in the world and the first from which spiral galaxies were observed.

Creative visionaries hailing from the county include Hollywood director Rex Ingram, comedian Neil Delamere, noted 19th-century scientist Mary Ward, engineer and inventor Bindon Blood Stoney, designer of, among other things, Dublin Port and docks; and co-founder of the renowned Grafton Architects (prestigious curators of the 2018 Venice Biennale), Yvonne Farrell.

Citizens of and visitors to the county since 2017 have enjoyed a multitude of enchanting events and activities, highlights of which are certainly the Hullabaloo! Children’s Festival and the OFFline Film Festival in Birr.
