The Linenhall Arts Centre proposes to commission 52 traditional musicians from Mayo to each compose one tune in response to their home locale - County Mayo. The musicians will be free to choose the tune form (jig, reel, hornpipe, polka etc…) and to interpret the theme broadly.
Over a period of three months the commissioned musicians will engage in creating a tune. During this time they will be invited to attend a series of six online events featuring experienced and well-regarded composers in the traditional music genre. These events will be hosted by the project-lead and the featured composers will talk about their work and their creative process in relation to composing in the Irish Traditional music idiom as well as engaging in a Q&A with the commissioned musicians.
On completion of the composition phase of the project the following will be created
a) a video recording of each musician playing and talking about their tune
b) a video recording for music transmission purposes to encourage wide dissemination and learning of these new tunes
c) an audio recording of each tune
d) a music transcription of the tune in staff and abc notation
These recordings and notations will be released one per week via the Linenhall Arts Centre webpage and social media platforms
