The purpose of the conference is to celebrate and commemorate the life and works of internationally renowned Roscommon born artist Roderic O'Conor. The conference is part of Roscommon County Council's Arts plan and Visual Arts Programme and supported by Creative Ireland funding. The programme will also provide opportunities for the general public to view some of O'Conor's original works, on loan from various institutions at the Roscommon Arts Centre Gallery. Speakers will include Roy Johnston, Pyers O'Conor Nash, Keran O'Conor and, amongst others Roisin Kennedy - a lecturer in the School of Art History and Cultural Policy at UCD. She is former Yeats Curator at the National Gallery of Ireland and of the State Collections at Dublin Castle. Her research focuses on art and politics, the critical reception of modernist art in Ireland and on censorship. She has published widely in edited collections including Atlas of the Irish Revolution, Cork University Press, 2017 and in peer-reviewed journals. She is co-editor of Censoring Art. Silencing the Artwork, I.B. Tauris, 2018 and Harry Clarke and Artistic Visions of the New Irish State, Irish Academic Press, 2018. She is currently co-editing a new edition of Sources on Irish Art for Cork University Press.
The conference will serve to forge links with Roscommon Associations and Societies and the Diaspora to preserve our culture and creativity nationally and internationally which is a key action in our Culture and Creativity Strategy
