Lowering the Tone
This project funds a series of workshops for children facilitated by experienced double bass and viola teachers that will inspire kids to pursue further learning on the instruments.
The workshops are designed to help identify potential double bass and viola players to join the Oriel Traditional Orchestra and perform arrangements of Irish traditional music, including a new suite, ‘The Oriel March’, commissioned by the Oriel Traditional Orchestra with funding from the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht. This performance is set to premiere in spring 2019.
The workshops utilise these instruments to help enable the creative potential of every child by opening up opportunities as bass players with the region's leading traditional music ensemble. Provision of the instruments ensures accessibility for members of the community who may not have access to them. These introductory workshops link in with the strong tradition of string playing in County Louth, and support plans to perform new works by Louth-based composers.
