\u2018A <\/span><\/span><\/span>Sense of Place’ <\/span><\/span><\/span>is the overarching theme <\/span><\/span><\/span>in <\/span><\/span><\/span>Kate Heffernan’s \u00a0\u2013 Writer in the Community <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>residency with\u00a0a range of events and outreach projects over the coming months.<\/p>\n

Kate will bring <\/span><\/span><\/span>a strong positive mental health dynamic and\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>community <\/span><\/span><\/span>participation in <\/span><\/span><\/span>her\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>writing workshops, offering members of the community an outlet to express themselves and their experiments of recent turbulent and anxiety ridden <\/span><\/span><\/span>lockdown <\/span><\/span><\/span>months.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>It <\/span><\/span><\/span>will<\/span><\/span><\/span> also <\/span><\/span><\/span>provide an<\/span><\/span><\/span> opportunity to challenge the status quo and reimagine futures that are more equitable and positive for all in the Laois community.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Laois Writer-in-Residence 2020 is jointly funded by Laois County Council and Creative Ireland Laois and is hosted by Dunamaise Arts Centre.<\/p>\n

Kate\u00a0is a native of Portlaoise and her\u00a0<\/span>first play,\u00a0In Dog Years I’m Dead<\/em>\u00a0was a winner of the 2013 Stewart Parker Trust’s ‘Emerging Playwright Award’ and an Irish Times Cultural Highlight in the same year.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>Peat<\/em>, her first play for children, was commissioned and produced by The Ark in 2019, and directed by Tim Crouch.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In 2014, she and director Maisie Lee were Dunamaise Arts Centres’\u00a0Theatre Artists-in-Residence. Whilst\u00a0there, Kate wrote and produced\u00a0Hometroots<\/em>, a series of short radio plays by, for and about the people of Laois.
