{"id":15780,"date":"2021-08-25T04:03:12","date_gmt":"2021-08-25T03:03:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.creativeireland.gov.ie\/event\/the-ever-widening-spiral\/"},"modified":"2021-08-25T04:03:12","modified_gmt":"2021-08-25T03:03:12","slug":"the-ever-widening-spiral","status":"publish","type":"event","link":"https:\/\/www.creativeireland.gov.ie\/en\/event\/the-ever-widening-spiral\/","title":{"rendered":"\u201cThe Ever Widening Spiral\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\"><span>The art is inspired by the writing of Flann O\u2019Brien with particular reference to The Third Policeman\u2019. <span lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\"><span>The exhibition comprises a wide range of painting, drawing, sculpture, printmaking, film and animation by the artists Eddie, Joanna and David O\u2019Kane.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\"><span>This exhibition is part of a series of exhibitions which comprises venues such as Salzburg University, Burns Library, Boston College, USA, and Boston College Headquarters, Dublin<span lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\"><span><span lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\"><span>The artists believe that Flann O\u2019Brien\u2019s birthplace, Strabane and Donegal had a major influence in his writing. Many of the artworks displayed reference these influences. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\"><span><span lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\"><span>The author invents an imaginary philosopher and self- proclaimed expert named De Selby. Throughout the book the fantastical theories of De Selby are expanded and exemplified in the form of lengthy foot notes. The characters in the main text inhabit a surreal world in which many of these concepts are acted out grotesque fashion.<\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\"><span><span lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\"><span><span lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\"><span><span lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\"><span>New artwork in this exhibition involves the use of the 3d printer and 3d technology to explore some of O\u2019Brien\u2019s scientific theories. This is a new departure for artistic practice in the North West of Ireland. The artist Eddie O\u2019Kane works with his mentor and technical advisor Christopher Roulston, Lecturer in Engineering, Letterkenny Institute of Technology, to produce these works.
