Join us as we celebrate the music that once frequented the halls of Rossmore Castle brought back to life through a project which began in 2019 entitled ‘Voices and Pipes – Rossmore’ led by Monaghan County Council Cultural Team.<\/p>\n
The interests of the Westenra family in the 1800\u2019s serve to illustrate the growing cultural engagement in Gaelic culture among members of the Ascendency. The Westenra family had an interest in Traditional Irish Music and more specifically in the uilleann pipes for at least two generations. The 2nd Baron, Warner William Westenra (1765-1842) was a noted performer, as was his brother Lieutenant Colonel Henry Westenra (b. 1770), while the next generation was well represented by Henry Robert Westenra (1792-1860), the 3rd Baron Rossmore. This tradition of music underscores the unique event in the walled garden of Rossmore Park.<\/p>\n
The evening\u2019s performance will comprise of a selection of tunes submitted by Henry Robert Westenra, to George Petrie for his collection, ‘George Petrie\u2019s Ancient Music of Ireland 1855’. Petrie described Westenra, as having, “a strong love and a fine taste for Irish music\u2019.\u00a0The music has been arranged by French Baroque cellist, Luc Gaugler for seven instruments.<\/p>\n
The instruments featured are harpsichord and chamber organ (Caoimhin Vallely), harp (Laoise Kelly), flute and whistles (Cormac Breatnach), uilleann pipes (Tiarn\u00e1n \u00d3 Duinnchinn), fiddle and voice (Zoe Conway), Baroque guitar (Eamonn Sweeney) and viol de gambe (Luc Gaugler).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":0,"featured_media":16138,"template":"","class_list":["post-16137","event","type-event","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"\n
