2021 marks the bicentenary of the first complete census of Ireland.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>Sometime in the early\u00a0<\/span><\/span>twentieth<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0century, a transcription of the original 1821 Aran Island census held in Dublin was\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>creat<\/span><\/span><\/span>ed and made its way to\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>Inis<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0M\u00f3r<\/span><\/span><\/span>. This<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0transcription was held by local historian Colman\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>Folan<\/span><\/span><\/span>. In the early 1940s,\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>Folan<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0loaned\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>his copy<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0to the local schoolteacher,\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>P\u00e1draig<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0\u00d3\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>hEithir<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>, and his son\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>Breand\u00e1n<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0created a copy of his own. In this version t<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>he original 1821 data is supplemented with additional contextual information, local knowledge or\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>seanchas<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em>\u00a0about the 1821 households<\/span><\/span><\/span>,<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0identif<\/span><\/span><\/span>ying<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0family lineages and\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>significant\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>historical\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>events<\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

To begin the process of making this census information accessible in a digital format, the data from th<\/span><\/span>is<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0twentieth<\/span><\/span><\/span>–<\/span><\/span><\/span>century transcription\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>will\u00a0be cross-referenced with the original 1821 data to ensure its accuracy. Project curator Deirdre N\u00ed Chonghaile will then collate all relevant data\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>and complete the necessary data-cleaning work.
