The traditional field gates dotted along our rural roadscapes, ironwork surrounding tombs and grave plots in our historic graveyards, and railings outside buildings all contribute to their distinctive character. However, historic ironwork needs to be cared for and maintained to ensure its continued survival in the landscape.

Ballinrobe Library is housed in St Mary’s Church, located just off Main Street. Mature trees and the old graveyard provide the setting for the building. The library and its attendant grounds are important heritage assets in the town and provide a tranquil space in the centre of Ballinrobe. In 2020, a project was commenced to enhance the graveyard/grounds of the library as an attractive and welcoming community space and promote its use as a civic space.

Located adjacent to the library building is the largest burial plot in graveyard, enclosed by beautiful wrought iron railings. Due to neglect over the decades, the condition of these railings has deteriorated significantly and detract from the overall appearance of the library grounds.

This project will undertake the repair and conservation of the railings on a phased basis. In 2021, the railings to the west side of the plot will be repaired and painted. Missing ironwork will be forged and reinstated. The conservation process will be recorded and documented.

["post-17766","event","type-event","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry

Conservation of Historic Ironwork - Creative Ireland Programme

<meta property="og:description" content="Traditional ironwork is a beautiful and important feature of the Irish landscape, which contributes greatly to sense of place.
