Donegal that includes a series of early ecclesiastical enclosures, penitential cairns, a holy well dedicated to St Colmcille, a post-medieval altar and a <em><span>cill\u00edn\u00a0<\/span><\/em>(children\u2019s graveyard). It may date to the sixth century AD when it was reputedly founded by St Colmcille, but evidence from excavation in 2019 and 2021 suggests that use of the site extends back into prehistory.\u00a0<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><a><span>Following on from this earlier work, another excavation is planned for the summer of 2022 during which community volunteers and Irish and US-based archaeology students will work together to investigate the nature and origin of the archaeological remains at Disert, and to place them in their wider cultural and landscape context.
