The people of Limerick have always taken great interest in their local bands. From the nineteenth century up until the present day, they would have been regular sights on the city streets, in local band halls and city parks. As a community-based voluntary band St. John’s Brass and Reed Band, one of Limericks oldest and best known, was formed in 1865 and over the last century and a half has played an active and very prominent part of Limerick’s cultural development, performing at local community, national and international level over the years.<\/p>\n
Through performance under the guidance of a musical director the “bandstand” was a venue where bands made that connection that brought people together to listen and enjoy the vast array of musical genres. With Limerick a city comprising of different nationalities, this initiative is ideally culturally suited to re-establishing this link through utilising the bandstand at O’Brien’s Park in Clare Street.<\/p>\n
With creative performance in collaboration with friends from the Redemptorist Centre of Music, they will bring their own sense of joy and colour into peoples lives while providing an educational insight which may trigger a desire to learn an instrument.<\/p>\n
