Residents endured a strict routine marked by exhausting work, minimal food rations, and deplorable hygiene. Children, who comprised a significant portion of the workhouse population, faced particularly harsh conditions. Many entered the workhouses due to family crises, including eviction from farms or parental emigration. Orphans, abandoned children, and illegitimate offspring also sought refuge there.
