In the early 19th century, Joseph Smyth, a former Lancashire cotton mill manager, established Smyth &amp; Co. in Balbriggan&#8217;s Freemans\u2019 Row (now Railway Street), producing stockings of such exceptional quality that they were worn by European royalty, including Princess Eugenie of Austria and the Tzarina of Russia. In 1837, the factory gained its most prestigious patron, Queen Victoria herself.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Sorensen\u2019s talk and slide show will offer insight into the rich history of Fingal&#8217;s hosiery and textile manufacturing industry, which inspired the group exhibition <a href=\"https:\/\/www.creativeireland.gov.ie\/en\/event\/weaving-the-threads-of-heritage-a-contemporary-art-exhibition-inspired-by-fingals-textile-heritage-and-manufacturing-legacy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Weaving the Threads of Heritage<\/em><\/a>. The exhibition opens in Ardgillan Gallery on 12th April and runs until 11th May 2025.<\/p>\n<p><em>Venue: Drawing Room, Ground Floor, Ardgillan Castle.
