Cork’s docks have long been a vital link to the outside world, connecting the city to international trade and local communities. Cork\u2019s maritime history is rich with adventure and exploration, and the timber quays have played a crucial role in shaping the city. As Cork continues to evolve, its past remains an essential part of its identity.<\/p>\n
This project aims to capture the essence of Cork’s Docklands before they undergo significant redevelopment. Mike Seaborne, a renowned photographer, author, and museum curator, along with a local oral historian, will document the buildings, businesses, and people who have lived and worked in the Marina area. Cork Public Museum, in collaboration with Libraries and Archives, will also work to identify, retrieve, and acquire historical objects and documents from local businesses. These efforts will include photographs, documents, and important artifacts.<\/p>\n
The goal is to create a comprehensive archive of the Marina\/Docklands, which will be shared with the public through a book, a traveling exhibition, and digital access via the museum\u2019s website. The first event showcasing this project will be European Maritime Day, held in Cork from May 21-23, 2025.<\/p>\n
Preserving the history of Cork’s Docklands is crucial before it is lost forever.
