{"id":42733,"date":"2026-08-25T03:01:21","date_gmt":"2026-08-25T02:01:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.creativeireland.gov.ie\/event\/the-seahorse-memorial-on-the-doneraile-walk-tramore\/"},"modified":"2026-08-25T03:01:21","modified_gmt":"2026-08-25T02:01:21","slug":"the-seahorse-memorial-on-the-doneraile-walk-tramore","status":"publish","type":"event","link":"https:\/\/www.creativeireland.gov.ie\/en\/event\/the-seahorse-memorial-on-the-doneraile-walk-tramore\/","title":{"rendered":"The Seahorse Memorial on The Doneraile Walk, Tramore"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <em>Sea Horse&nbsp;<\/em>Memorial Stone was commissioned in 1816<span>&nbsp; <\/span>and was intended to be erected over a mass grave in Drumcannon graveyard.&nbsp;<span> <\/span>The Memorial Stone was created by Moses Robinson of Waterford City, who also erected the Cenotaph <em>Sea Horse&nbsp;<\/em>Memorial in Christ Church graveyard, Tramore. However, the Memorial Stone was stored in Robinson\u2019s yard in Waterford City until finally erected on the beach at Tramore Strand in 1862 close to the place where the <em>Sea Horse&nbsp;<\/em>had wrecked. The stone was restored in 1902, moved to its present position on Doneraile Walk in 1912, and restored again in 1955.<\/p>\n<p>The limestone slab is vulnerable to weathering&nbsp;<span> <\/span>and erosion. The paint in the inscription has been lost in many areas, and stone recession and the development of lichen and a dark-coloured biofilm coating has reduced the legibility of some words and letters, and in some cases some individual letters are lost.
