{"id":8098,"date":"2022-04-21T15:04:35","date_gmt":"2022-04-21T14:04:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/prod-creativeireland.zestydev.com\/event\/meath-county-council-gaeltacht-scholarship-scheme\/"},"modified":"2022-04-21T15:04:35","modified_gmt":"2022-04-21T14:04:35","slug":"meath-county-council-gaeltacht-scholarship-scheme","status":"publish","type":"event","link":"https:\/\/www.creativeireland.gov.ie\/en\/event\/meath-county-council-gaeltacht-scholarship-scheme\/","title":{"rendered":"Meath County Council Gaeltacht Scholarship Scheme"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span><span><strong><span>M\u00e1ire Nic Shiubhlaigh Gaeltacht Scholarship Winners 2019<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span>Twelve students from secondary schools across the county have been awarded Gaeltacht scholarships by Meath County Council.The awards are funded by Meath County Council under the Creative Ireland Meath programme.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span>The M\u00e1ire Nic Shiubhlaigh scholarships were presented to students at a special ceremony in Navan library on Thursday 23rd May.The scholarship scheme honours M\u00e1ire Nic Shiubhlaigh a founder actress of the Abbey Theatre and a leader of Cumann na mB\u00e1n in Jacob\u2019s Biscuit Factory during the 1916 Rising.M\u00e1ire was also an employee of Meath County Council where she worked as a branch librarian in Laytown during the 1950\u2019s.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>Russian native and author Olga Balaeva, guest speaker at the presentation spoke about the Irish language in a popular and engaging way, combining historical and linguistic facts with a light tone. The Russian linguist living in Ireland, gave an outsider\u2019s perspective on this most national of subjects.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>Olga Balaeva is an English language teacher living in Dublin. Born in Moscow in 1989, she completed a Bachelor\u2019s Degree in European Languages and Literature at Moscow State University, which was followed by a Master\u2019s Degree in English Language at Oxford University. The focus of her studies was on bilingualism in Ireland.
