“Forgotten Sappers” is a documentary film exploring identity and heritage from a perspective that reveals much about a little known part of Cork history. It is the story of a man from Crosshaven, who had made his mark far from Ireland and returned many years later to reside once again in his home town.\u00a0 It deals with the struggles that many of the men who fought in the First World War had to endure when they returned to Ireland and tried to secure pensions. The wife of the man at the centre of this story voluntarily ran the committee in Crosshaven, which helped the servicemen to secure pensions from Britian. This documentary will tell their stories through letters, archives and what is remembered of these servicemen in the Carrigaline and Crosshaven areas.\u00a0 It will also involve the local community in the telling and recording of these stories.\u00a0 This documentary provides a fascinating insight into the Irish experience in international contexts and contributes to our contemporary understanding of ourselves and the world beyond our shores.\u00a0 It has the potential to say something different about the unique relationship between Ireland and Britain which is of particular interest in the context of Brexit.\u00a0It is also about a community’s efforts to be heard and not be written out of history which makes this historical exploration all the more compelling and relevant to the fast evolving community of Carrigaline and Crosshaven.\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":26,"featured_media":0,"template":"","class_list":["post-8776","event","type-event","status-publish","hentry"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"\n
