The\nperson-centred characteristics of the arts in particular, can take on a\ncritical role in enhancing our sense of identity as we grow older, and possibly\nexperience feelings of marginalization or invisibility arising from our age,\nhealth or social status.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I<\/strong>n 2019 Creative Ireland enabled Age & Opportunity to place six artists into residential care homes to provide a rich arts experience for older people many of whom are living with Dementia.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Research tells us that older people who engage with the arts benefit from a significant boost to their self-esteem and overall quality of life , even those  who are excluded through dementia. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

These six\nresidencies will bring the benefits of arts participation to up to 250 older\npeople who either live in or visit care facilities and will also positively\nimpact on over 500 people including residents, staff, families, artists, and\nthe wider community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Printmaker Aoife Barrett<\/strong> will invite residents at Raheen Community Hospital<\/strong> to participate in a series of conversations, bookmaking and printmaking. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Visual artist John Conway<\/strong> will\ndocument the life stories of the service users of the Naas Day Care<\/strong>\nCentre. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Photographer\nBrian Cooney<\/strong> aims to use photography to help the residents of St John\u2019s\nCommunity Hospital in Sligo<\/strong> to help weave their personal stories. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Based in the Clonskeagh Community\nHospital<\/strong> in Dublin multimedia artist Cliona Ni Laoi<\/strong> will use\nprojections to create immersive visual collages using light and sound. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Multimedia artist Andy\nParsons<\/strong> aims to record the hands of\nservice users of the  Killybegs\nCommunity Hospital <\/strong>andcapture\nthe ingenuity, resourcefulness and creativity of the older people of Donegal<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ciara Rodgers<\/strong> will engage the attendees of Castleisland Day Care Centre<\/strong> in a conversation about the history of the buildings in their area for a project in charcoal drawing. This Age & Opportunity programme is supported by the Arts Council, the Creative Ireland Programme\u2019s National Creativity Fund, the HSE. the Waterford Healing Arts Trust (WHAT), Creative Life, Mercer\u2019s Institute for Successful Ageing (MISA) and the Dementia Services Information and Development Centre (DSIDC) both based in MISA, St. James\u2019s Hospital. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
