Building\nIreland\u2019s first Intercultural Museum programme for schools<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Described\nby Lonely Planet as \u2018not just the best museum in Ireland but one of the best\nin Europe\u2019,<\/em> the Chester Beatty is the pre-eminent Irish museum promoting\nthe appreciation and understanding of world cultures through its extraordinary\ncollection of manuscripts, rare books, and other treasures from Europe, the\nMiddle East, North Africa and Asia. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Intercultural dialogue and learning plays a key role in the\nmuseum\u2019s mission and fosters dialogue with the communities as represented in\nthe collections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Creative Ireland Programme in\ncollaboration with the Irish Human Rights and\nEquality Commission have supported an 18 month project to research, develop and\nbuild its first Intercultural Museum programme for schools (2018-2020). The\nChester Beatty invited Mary Immaculate, Limerick, Maynooth University, the\nIntercultural Education Service (Education Authority of Northern Ireland) and\nUK Heritec Education Consultancy to partner and develop the programme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New school tours were designed to promote exploration and understanding, using key themes inspired by the Chester Beatty\u2019s extraordinary collections. These tours were road tested by  Community National Schools Lecarrow, Co. Roscommon<\/a>, Faughart CNS<\/a>, Scoil Chormaic CNS<\/a> Ballbriggan, City West & Saggart CNS<\/a> and Ashbourne CNS<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Guides and facilitators were trained in visual thinking\nstrategies and object-based learning. Continuous professional development for\nteachers was designed and delivered with two training sessions in Northern Ireland and Chester Beatty during the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The schools programme was launched in March 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

–          Teachers and students can access\nonline learning resources to help them understand the collections and\ncompliment a number of school subjects such as art, history and world faiths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

–          School tours of the collections will\nbe available on designated days of the school week, free of charge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

–          Gallery trails will be available online in addition to online access to the museum\u2019s collections https:\/\/chesterbeatty.ie\/explore\/places\/<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

–          The Chester Beatty will work with\nthe Junior Cert Religious Education programme and plans to offer continuous\nprofessional development in the future<\/p>\n\n\n\n
