When\nyou give young people aged between 8 and 12 the opportunity and confidence to\nexplore contemporary art on their own terms\u2026they create a whole new language. That\nis exactly what happened when 150 young people from five primary schools in the\nMid Limerick region were invited by EVA International with the support of\nCreative Ireland to explore the world of contemporary art<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Picasso\npants<\/em> \u2013 the\nclothes that art students wear<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Icantouche<\/em>– the sensation of not being able to\ntouch an art work<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trumpflip<\/em> \u2013 when the impossible happens<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A\nnew way of describing the experience of visiting an art gallery and looking at\ncontemporary art emerged when 150 young people from five primary schools in the\nMid Limerick region were invited by EVA International with the support of\nCreative Ireland to explore the world of contemporary art<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After\na five week programme of artist\u2019s visits, gallery explorations, workshops with\nsome of Ireland\u2019s most prestigious writers including including Sue Rainsford ,\nthe young people came up with a whole new vocabulary to describe their experience\nof contemporary art.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With support of Creative\nIreland EVA International launched \nBetter Words designed by Piquant which documents  the experience of  primary school 150 children from five Limerick\nschools Corpus Christi Primary School,  Knockainey National School, Limerick School\nProject, Our Lady Queen of Peace, and St. Senan\u2019s National School Foynes<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Organised around themes\nsuch as \u2018Society & Politics\u2019, \u2018Practice\u2019, and \u2018Technology\u2019, Better Words<\/strong> offers an introduction to\nkey themes in contemporary art practice today, while also reflecting the\ncultural curiosity, creative energy and humourous irreverence of the\nparticipating school children. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Better Words<\/strong> also features a\nforeword by acclaimed author Kevin Barry and notes on the workshop process by\ncurator Maeve Mulrennan. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Copies of the book will\nbe distributed in Ireland via the schools and public library network, as well\nas available to purchase via EVA International and associated retailers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Director of EVA International, Matt\nPacker says: I am very proud to launch\nthe Better Words book, which culminates a collaborative process of workshops\nwith schools, leading artists, and arts writers. The book gives voice to the\nimaginations of the participating school-children and demonstrates their open\nand inquisitive approach to contemporary art. By empowering children to develop\ntheir own artistic-terms, it creatively overturns one of the common barriers to\nbroader public engagement with the critical ambitions and complexities that are\nintrinsic to contemporary art as a reflection of today\u2019s world. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Minister for Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Josepha\nMadigan says: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I am delighted that Creative Ireland have supported this wonderful project through our National Creativity Fund. The Better Words book is the result of collaboration between EVA International, leading artists, and over 150 school children across Limerick. The ambition of the project is reflected in the way that Better Words creatively embraces the challenges of contemporary art by building young, curious, and creative minds into the process. <\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Better Words<\/strong> programme has been supported by the Creative Ireland Programme\u2019s National Creativity Fund and represents an initiative by EVA International to empower new forms of access and engagement with contemporary art through the use of creative language <\/p>\n\n\n\n
