Sheela na Gig 3D- Mapping the Exhibitionist Carvings of Co. Tipperary

Sheela-na-Gig3D – Mapping the Exhibitionist Carvings of Co. Tipperary, was a collaborative project between DH_Age, John Flynn (Graphics Artist) and local heritage groups in Co. Tipperary. The project has been slightly altered from the initial proposal due to Covid-19 restrictions. Initially the goal was to hold in person workshops with community groups in Fethard and North Tipperary, but these were replaced with a series of training videos released as part of Virtual Heritage Week 2020, and will be followed up with in person events at a future date.

Secondly the project aimed to highlight the unique heritage collection of exhibitionist figures from Tipperary to an international audience. This has been achieved with great success through DH_Age’s open access catalogue of 3D heritage models for Ireland, and a large social media project during the month of October to coincide with Inktober, an international celebration of artists.

The objective of the project was to digitally record each of the carvings in Co. Tipperary and present them in a freely accessible online digital art catalogue of Sheela-na-Gigs for Ireland. This has largely been achieved with two carvings (GPA Bolton and Cashel Palace Hotel) remaining to be recorded. Access to these carvings has been difficult due to access restrictions and construction at the site.

DH_Age and John Flynn, delivered a series of creative workshops in digital heritage recording methods and traditional sketching and drawing techniques.
