Táin Tapestry

Roscommon County Council is taking part in a collaborative project with An Táin Arts Centre in Dundalk, the Táin March festival, and their organisers, spread across five counties to create a tapestry depicting scenes from the great epic. Five tapestries will be created in total, which when brought together will show a scene based on each counties geographical location as described in the Táin Bó Cuailgne.

The project will have an overall artist who will create the vision and images that are to be depicted. The artist will work with a textile designer who will help create a pattern for each tapestry and select materials.

Each County will have its own project manager or coordinator who would be responsible for selecting the needle-workers in that county and ensuring that they carry out the work in line with the artist’s vision and pattern using only the approved materials.

Once completed the tapestry can be brought together for celebratory occasions, such as the launch of the Táin March Festival every year. Each county will be responsible for ensuring that they store and/or exhibit their tapestry, preferably in a public building where it can be enjoyed. An Táin Arts Centre will be the organisation responsible for engaging the relevant artist and collaborators in the different counties with the assistance of the Táin March Festival.

More information will be available at a future date.
