I See Who I Am
I See Who I Am is a community-based visual art project designed for a group of older adults who are ready to explore identity and self-expression through portraiture. Taking place over eight workshops in August 2025 at An Táin Arts Centre, the project offers a welcoming, accessible space for participants to engage with visual art—many for the first time.
Each session will introduce different aspects of portraiture, from technical approaches to exploring self-identity through imagery. Participants will be encouraged to work with a medium that resonates with them—painting, drawing, watercolour, gouache or acrylic—using personal reference materials such as photographs, objects, or imagined versions of themselves.
With in-depth guidance and time to experiment, each participant will create a final portrait that reflects their individual story, drawing from their past, present and future. The series will culminate in a one-day exhibition during Culture Night 2025 at An Táin, where their finished portraits will be displayed alongside the personal inspirations behind them.
I See Who I Am celebrates creativity in later life, fosters connection, and challenges ageist narratives—offering participants the chance to express who they are, how they see themselves, and how they wish to be seen.
