Celebrating Traveller Songs and Stories
This initiative brings together women from the Traveller community to explore and celebrate their rich musical heritage. This 5-week pilot workshop series in Loughboy, Kilkenny, is supported by the Kilkenny Traveller Community Network (KTCM).Facilitator Susie Lamb will ask: What songs do you know? Where did you learn them? Where have they come from? Will you sing them?
Sharing lullabies, ritual, work, wedding and mourning songs, we celebrate their narratives, foster place-making, hospitality, exchange, heritage and celebrate lineage to create a tapestry of shared memories.
Where appropriate, songs will be recorded to preserve the oral heritage of indigenous singing.
This is part of the larger Songlines by Susie Lamb, celebrating how songs evolve and travel with the changing circumstances of people. Jeffrey Gormly, a theatre-maker with a strong social practice, will offer thematic explorations and help to frame the presentation of this work in a sensitive manner.
