Celebrating 40 Years of Tubbercurry Old Fair Day Festival in 2025, the Tubbercurry Old Fair Day Festival is a vibrant, community-driven event that has become a cornerstone of cultural expression in Tubbercurry, South County Sligo.
Managed by dedicated volunteers under the Tubbercurry Chamber of Commerce and Community Association, the festival has grown exponentially since its revival in 1985.
Now attracting over 22,000 attendees on the Old Fair Day, the festival spans five days and offers a rich variety of activities, including captivating performances, skilled demonstrators in the heritage and craft village, artisan stalls, vintage displays, exhibitions, and live music.
The committee upholds strong governance structures, ensuring the event runs smoothly and safely for all involved.
The festival's origins trace back to a 'patent' granted in 1750 to James Napier for the holding of two fairs annually. Over the years, the number of fairs increased, and by 1880, a fair was held each month. These fairs were not only commercial hubs but also social gatherings where match-making, political discussions, and community bonding occurred.
In 1985, recognising the cultural significance of these traditional fairs, a group of enterprising locals revived the event, leading to the establishment of the modern Tubbercurry Old Fair Day Festival.
Today, the festival continues to honour its roots in addition to showcasing traditional crafts such as wood-turning, wool craft, spinning and ceramics.
