The Civil War in East Mayo - An exhibition of Civil War Artefacts

This community-led public history project brings to light lesser-known Civil War stories from East Mayo (1922–1923) through a creative and collaborative process. Developed with the support of local families, the project features a public presentation and an exhibition of previously unseen artifacts, photographs, letters, and memorabilia.

Running over eight days to coincide with the Siamsa Sraide Festival in Swinford, the project invites the wider community to engage with local heritage in a meaningful way.

Presentation: July 31st at the Gateway Hotel, Swinford
Exhibition: August 5th–8th at Swinford National School

A key highlight is a restored film reel from the 1920s/30s, featuring rare footage of Carrowbeg House and Swinford during the Civil War. This, along with other items generously shared by local families, forms the heart of the exhibition. A specially produced booklet will accompany the display, offering deeper insight into the stories behind the objects.

This project aims to make local history accessible to all, drawing the community into the storytelling process and encouraging a shared sense of place and heritage.
