The Mantle: The Murúcha/ Seal Women or Mermaids of Rossbeigh and Beyond

Listen to the stories of mythological sea creatures near and far in the company of celebrated poets, writers and researchers.

This event will draw dialogues between local folklore, tales from along the West coast and further afield, moving between oceans, shorelines and cultures. Eithne Ní Ghallchobhair, a storyteller/seanchaí from west Donegal, will read from her retelling of the seal woman’s tale, An Craiceann agus a Luach / Under Her Skin, accompanied by writer Paddy Bushe with his translation of the text. Dr Gregory R. Darwin will talk about his research around the narrative tradition of mermaid tales, exploring its presence not only in Ireland, but also Scotland, Iceland and Scandinavia, with roots reaching back into antiquity.
