Save Our Songbirds: A Family Eco-Craft Day at Kilmovee
This wonderful project is a one-day, hands-on community event designed to connect families with nature through creativity, environmental education, and seasonal awareness. Timed around the autumn equinox, the event highlights the changing season and the importance of supporting local bird populations as they prepare for the colder months.
Led by a horticultural expert with a deep understanding of ecosystems, participants will craft bird feeders using willow, and then choose to build either a wooden nest box or a “bug hotel”—all using organic, sustainable materials. These practical, nature-friendly creations will help support biodiversity in gardens and green spaces throughout the community.
The event is designed as a family-friendly experience, welcoming all ages, with parents encouraged to assist younger children. Alongside the making, participants will learn about the challenges facing birds and insects, how to attract and protect them, and the vital role they play in maintaining healthy ecosystems.
By blending traditional skills like willow weaving and simple woodworking with ecological awareness, the project fosters creativity, connection, and care for the natural world. Participants will leave not only with their handmade creations, but also with the knowledge and inspiration to continue supporting wildlife at home.
