Marine and Maritime Heritage

County Mayo boasts one of Ireland’s most expansive and diverse coastlines, rich in marine heritage that spans centuries of coastal life, maritime traditions, and cultural connections to the sea. From fishing communities and folklore to shipwrecks, seaweed harvesting, and coastal architecture, Mayo’s marine heritage is a vital part of its identity.

Mayo County Council's Heritage Office will work on a three-part initiative to explore, document, and celebrate this remarkable heritage. This initial phase will focus on collecting stories, historical records, and oral histories that reflect the depth of Mayo’s marine legacy; with future plans to share this heritage with the wider public through exhibitions, digital storytelling, and creative projects - working closely with coastal communities to creatively engage with and celebrate their unique connections to the sea through workshops, events, and collaborative projects.

This initiative aims to foster pride, deepen understanding, and inspire new generations to engage with Mayo’s marine legacy in meaningful and creative ways.
