Soil Story
Through the workshop and Soil Story performance we wish to create a wormery and leaf compost movement in Sligo among the early year’s community in Caltragh, Cranmore, Tobercurry, Enniscrone and Sligo town. Children will be given the skills and knowledge of how to create a leaf compost and wormery during each theatre performance. We hope that they will create a leaf compost and set up a wormery after seeing Soil Story in their early year’s settings. Through our existing relationship with Sligo County Childcare Committee, we have discussed the possibility of them supporting us further with this idea through the purchase of equipment (e.g. wormeries) and they have said that they are open to sourcing Healthy Ireland funding for 2025.
In addition, we want to encourage children to become ‘change makers’ and ‘citizen scientists’ in their own local communities. We aim to increase children’s awareness of the life that exists within soil, its fragility and our (humans) dependence on it and the need to protect and preserve it through this new theatre work. The EU Soil Strategy for 2030 highlights the importance of soil not only to human’s ‘health and well-being’ but to our very existence (Sligo Culture and Creativity Strategy, p.16)
