Old Head Young Shoulders
Hannah Reilly (Ever Unique, Coleraine) and Geraldine O’Brien (Straffan Drama Club) will lead this collaborative creative project between two established youth theatre organisations to develop a piece of contemporary theatre based on the issues facing young people in both communities of Belfast and Kildare.
Through discussion, devising and writing workshops, the young people will explore what they hold in common and what is different between their communities, one steeped in its urban roots and the other firmly planted in a rural setting. Across the course of 6 days in October 30 young people aged 12 – 19 will visit each other’s respective community, taking it in turns to host, and immerse themselves in workshops considering social, political and historical theme and norms pertinent to them. Ever Unique Coleraine will host 15 members of Straffan Drama Club across 3 days and culminating in a showing. Straffan Drama Club will then welcome 15 members of Cresent Youth Theatre on the campus of Maynooth University for
3 days.
This collaborative project aims to empower these young people to tell their stories, placing them in a wider societal and historical context. The diversity of members of both groups will be celebrated, presenting the voice of a new Ireland, one that is many miles away from a time when the Good Friday Agreement was signed in 1998, before these young people were born.
The project will consider generational trauma, trust and feelings of otherness.
