‘One Mystery, One Town’

Longford Library Services has launched an exciting new community reading initiative, One Mystery, One Town, supported by Longford County Council and Creative Ireland.

The project invites everyone in the community to read The Case of the Vanishing Painting by Brian Gallagher (published by The O’Brien Press), creating a shared reading experience that promotes literacy, sparks creativity, and strengthens community spirit.

The initiative was officially launched at Edgeworthstown Library on 7 January, bringing together local schools, families, and community organisations. Pupils from St. John’s N.S. and St. Mary’s N.S. attended alongside parents and library staff, highlighting the strong sense of partnership at the heart of the project.

Coordinated by Home School Community Liaison Enda Ward and librarian Kim Taylor, the launch showcased the educational and social value of shared reading across generations. By encouraging families to read and explore the story together, the programme strengthens connections between home, school, and library, while inspiring creative responses through writing, art, and problem-solving activities.

As part of the project, local artist Sophie Carroll Hunt has been working with both schools to help students imagine and create their own interpretations of the “vanishing painting.” These unique artworks will be displayed at a special celebration event on Friday, 27 February at Edgeworthstown Library, where author Brian Gallagher will also visit.
