Culture and Community Through Dance

Creative Ireland proudly supported Global Rhythms, a dynamic dance initiative led by members of Kilkenny’s international protection community. Over five weeks, the programme brought people together through movement, showcasing global cultural traditions and creating meaningful opportunities for connection and creative expression.

Participants engaged with a wide mix of dance styles—including Irish, Afrobeats, Salsa, and Somali Dhaanto—and worked with emerging lead dancers who received mentorship to develop both artistic and organisational skills. The project culminated in a collaborative performance at the Local Authority Integration Team’s intercultural celebration, strengthening confidence, visibility, and community pride.
Global Rhythms engaged a wide demographic, uniting people of different ages, cultures, and backgrounds through a shared creative experience. It demonstrated how participatory arts can build belonging, foster intercultural understanding, and empower underrepresented voices.
The initiative also aligned with national cultural priorities by delivering high quality participatory arts (Arts Council: Making Great Art Work), advancing Creative Ireland’s goals around wellbeing, inclusion, and creative communities, and reflecting the values of Culture 2025 and Heritage Ireland 2030 through its celebration of diverse cultural traditions. The project pilot enabled the LAIT team to develop a comprehensive programme for 2026 which will be showcased during the 2026 St. Patricks day parade.
