Historical Roscommon Castle Project

Students at the Edmund Rice Centre will collaborate with local artist Flin Keane to create a historical clay replica of Roscommon Castle—reimagining the iconic structure as it would have appeared in its full, original form. Through weekly sessions, students will begin with a paper model before progressing to clay, carefully crafting the castle’s architectural features and even creating a miniature army to bring the scene to life.

The project is designed not only as a creative learning experience but also as a form of art therapy. Working with clay will support students’ sensory needs, offering a calming, tactile activity that is especially beneficial for autistic learners. Along the way, participants will gain a deeper understanding of Roscommon’s cultural and historical heritage in an engaging, hands-on way.

Once completed, the clay replica will be proudly displayed in Roscommon Library for the community to enjoy, connecting the students’ creative work with the ongoing redevelopment of Roscommon Castle and its surrounding landscape.
