Feamainn agus Sliogáin Inis Meáin
This project will explore, document and share local knowledge of seaweeds and seashell on Inis Meáin, embedding ecological understanding within Irish‑language tradition, folklore and lived island experience.
The project builds on established collaboration between the Inis Meáin community and Galway County Council, demonstrated through the successful delivery of the Pabhsaeir Inis Meáin / Wildflowers of Inis Meáin booklet and associated public talks and guided walks.
Focusing on the island’s shoreline, Feamainn agus Sliogáin Inis Meáin will examine the ecological importance of seaweed and shells while recording traditional and contemporary uses, terminology, place‑based knowledge and stories associated with these coastal resources. Seaweed and shells have long played a role in food, fertiliser, craft and everyday life on Inis Meáin, and the project will ensure that this knowledge is captured alongside ecological information.
Community engagement will be central to the project’s approach. Local expertise and Irish‑language knowledge will inform the content, reflecting the collaborative model used in previous Inis Meáin initiatives. Public‑facing elements, such as talks, walks or small community events, will support awareness and appreciation of coastal biodiversity while reinforcing the relevance of local heritage knowledge for current and future generations.
