Dementia Café Memory Book & Memory Choir Initiative
This project works with the Galway County Dementia Café initiative which is run by Healthy Ireland.
The Memory Book Initiative aims to create individualised photographic booklets for participants of the Memory Cafés in Roundstone, Clifden, Oughterard and Letterfrack. As memories fade, a personal storybook ensures that each person’s life experiences, relationships, milestones, and treasured moments are preserved in a meaningful and accessible format. Each book will be made unique to the individual, using photos that reflect family connections, childhood, work life, home, hobbies, friendships, and special occasions such as weddings and births. These memory prompts will stimulate reminiscence, support identity, and encourage positive emotional responses.
The second element of the proposal is the delivery of a Memory Café Choir—a 12-week group singing initiative that promotes connection, communication, and joy through familiar music. Singing has been shown to stimulate memory, reduce stress, and enhance social participation. Sessions will focus on gentle musical engagement suitable for all abilities.
These creative wellbeing initiatives will strengthen community connection, celebrate identity, and provide accessible, inclusive arts-based engagement to support people living with
dementia and their families.
