The Big Dig is a hands-on archaeological experience delivered as part of Architecture Kerry 2026, offering participants the opportunity to step into the role of an archaeologist. Hosted in Pearse Park, Tralee, this highly engaging installation features simulated excavation pits where children, students and families can uncover replica artefacts, record their findings, and learn about Ireland’s rich built heritage.

Enhancing the experience, the site will also include a replica Viking house and add-on workshops where participants can immerse themselves in an archaeological environment and explore ancient crafts. These elements form part of the wider installation, including the Big Dig excavation activity itself. A maximum of 12 participants per session will take part in the Big Dig Workshop, ensuring a high-quality, hands-on experience.

Running from 24–26 September, the programme includes dedicated school sessions, delivered in collaboration with the Heritage Hunters Award (primary level) and the Kerry Young Historian Award (secondary level), with bookings managed through the museum.

A family day takes place on Saturday, welcoming the wider public to take part in guided digging sessions in a fun and interactive environment. The Big Dig encourages curiosity, teamwork and discovery while promoting awareness of archaeology, conservation and place-making. This much-loved event has proven extremely popular in previous years.
