175 Years of Navan Railway

2025 marks 175 years since the opening of the railway at Navan on 15th February 1850. Built by the Dublin and Drogheda Railway, Navan became part of the Great Northern Railway (Ireland) network in 1876 with its yellow brick station built in 1885. 120 years later and Navan Station still survives, along with its original station master’s house, signal cabin and engine shed, now used by Bus Eireann.

The 175 Years of Navan Railway project will be a series of events to celebrate the arrival of the railway in Navan and the enormous impact it had on its community. There will be an exhibition with an official launch during Heritage Week, a walking tour of the station complex (subject to permission), and a guest lecture to mark the end of Heritage Week. The project is being organised by historian Dr Siobhan Osgood in conjunction with Navan & District Historical Society. The exhibition will display historic photographs and artefacts from the collections of the National Library, Irish Railway Record Society Archive, Railway Preservation Society of Ireland and the Irish Architectural Archive.

A walking tour of Navan Station will be given by Dr Osgood on Wednesday 20th August at 2pm which will include a history of the station as well as a walk-through of the architectural features of the station, signal cabin and engine shed.
