Amhráin Inis Eoghain - Inishowen Traditional Music Project

The project will engage local historians and authorities in the Irish language in Inishowen. They will give a background to the history of the language so the young participants can get an understanding as to why the language died. It is hoped that this will reawaken an interest and a sense of longing to explore the language again.

By introducing Mairead Nί Mhaonaigh to workshop the songs and poetry, it is hoped that the young singers & musicians will see the value in the unique cultural heritage that surrounds them.

The process will be creative and stimulating using current third level music students to help bridge the link between older authorities in the language and a fresh dynamic way to arrange the music for a new audience.

The project will be documented, and performances and recordings of songs will be made available to Irish Traditional Music Archive as well as being held in the Inishowen Traditional Music Project archive. This will be a resource for tracing the cultural and creative process in bringing the language to the fore.

By publishing the material online, the songs and history of the language will be accessible to the public and provide a resource for further research and study.

Exploring and uncovering the history, culture and language enhances Inishowen as a strong cultural destination. Developing and exploring this aspect of the culture stimulates interest in the area for visitors and encourages further research.
