Biddy's Day: Brath Bríd & Brigid’s Girdle Workshop

Weaving Brigid’s Girdle

Participants will be invited to learn the ancient craft of making Brigid’s Girdle; a large circular braid of straw, woven with care and intention. Once used across Ireland in rituals of protection and blessing, the girdle was passed over heads and bodies, invoking Brigid’s healing and fertility at the threshold of spring. Led by skilled straw workers, participants will prepare and plait straw into these sacred circles, connecting with a tradition that grounds ritual in the rhythm of the hands. No experience is necessary, only a willingness to listen, weave, and share in the making. The finished girdles may be used in festival ceremonies or brought home as a symbol of care and continuity.

Brat Bríde – Stitching the Cloak

The Brat Bríde, or Brigid’s cloak, is a smaller, more intimate tradition, one of quiet embroidery and reflection. Participants will stitch personal symbols onto cloth squares, drawing inspiration from Brigid’s themes of healing, protection and creativity. Traditionally, the cloth is left outside on Brigid’s Eve to receive her blessing. It becomes a talisman for the year ahead, kept near, tucked under pillows, or carried for strength. No sewing experience is required and all materials are provided. This is a space for creativity, memory and slow making, a space where stories are stitched into fabric and where personal ritual meets shared heritage.

The booking link will be shared on the Biddy's Day Facebook page closer to the time.
