Biddy's Day: Master Straw Hat-Maker Workshops
Led by one of Ireland’s last traditional straw hat-makers, Mike Coffey, participants are invited to learn the tools, the rhythm, the patience and the story behind each twist of straw during these straw-hat making workshops.
The Biddy’s Day festival committee (in June) and the public (February Bank Holiday Weekend) will be guided through the essential techniques of hat-weaving, from selecting and preparing straw to the slow, deliberate shaping of the brim and crown. Along the way, Mike will share tales of his childhood, his mentors and the role that straw hats played in the Biddy traditions, part protective charm, part celebratory dress and always a mark of belonging.
Whether you're drawn to the tactile experience of craft, the desire to preserve a vanishing art, or simply the joy of working with your hands, this workshop offers a rare opportunity to connect deeply with Ireland’s cultural roots. Participants leave not only with a handmade object, but with a newfound appreciation for the labour, love and lore woven into everyday objects of the past. Places are limited to ensure each person gets individual guidance. All materials are provided, and no previous experience is necessary.
The booking link will be available on the Biddy's Day Facebook page closer to the date.
