Catchments 2025
CATCHMENTS 2025 - is a countrywide creative community project that aims to mobilise “Citizen Art” as a complement to "Citizen Science", the two contributing to society’s growing concern for the environment and reflecting the need for an understanding of the world that is driven by both data and empathy, nurturing both artistic creativity and scientific curiosity.
In County Wicklow, Catchments 2025 looked at the Liffey Head Bog. The Liffey Head Bog is one of the best examples of an actively growing mountain blanket bog in Ireland, and is a designated Special Area of Conservation (SAC). Artists Anne Cleary and Denis Connolly aka School of Looking, have developed a programme studying this Bog and the great river that begins its journey there, engaging in citizen science activities and making art with local teenagers and young adults from the refugee community. The programme is being made in collaboratiion with The Shaking Bog Festival, Fighting Words Wicklow and The Refugee Council and is part of a larger project called Catchments 2025 which aims to increase awareness and understanding of fresh water biodiversity across the island and has received support from Creative Ireland, the Department of Education, UCD’s Earth Institute and seven county councils as well as a Research Ireland Discover Award.
