Clare Cillíní Survey
This project outlines the publication of the Clare Cillíní Survey on the Clare iCAN website, with a scheduled launch during Heritage Week 2025.
The objective is to make the survey data publicly accessible, enhancing awareness, engagement, and understanding of these culturally significant sites across County Clare.
The project includes the digitisation and upload of detailed information on 144 identified Cillíní sites within the county. This figure is notably high in comparison to the national average—excluding the four counties with the highest numbers, most Irish counties have approximately 11 Cillíní, with many having fewer than five.
Cillíní were historically used as burial grounds for unbaptised infants and others excluded from consecrated burial by the Catholic Church. In Clare, these sites were often located near medieval churches and holy wells, offering families a degree of spiritual connection and accessibility. The use of Cillíní persisted into the 1940s and, in some cases, into the 1950s and 1960s.
As part of the project, community-based onsite engagements will be carried out to share findings, foster dialogue, and support local remembrance efforts.
The Clare Cillíní Survey contributes to this ongoing process of recognition and remembrance, ensuring that these sites—and the histories they represent—are preserved and respected.
