Community and Family Literacy

The community and family literacy strand works to improve outcomes for children and families in Ballymun through development and scaffolding of reading, writing, story-telling and oral language skills. The community and family literacy programmes promote children's language and literacy and bring books to life using the evidence-based Balanced Literacy Framework. Language and literacy activities are modelled by Family Literacy practitioners from Youngballymun, using an evidence-based approach incorporating arts and crafts, games, story telling and creative methods to make reading fun in Ballymun .

An oral language workshop is proposed which will be aimed at particular demographics in Ballymun to create a bank of knowledge around culture/heritage and develop reading/writing/oral language skills. Parents will be invited by Family Literacy practitioners working on the ground in Ballymun to take part in 3 hour sessions 1x per week over 8 weeks. The programme will be open to parents who wish to attend, with numbers depending on indoor restrictions at the time. Parents will learn how to bring books to life for their child and create a love of reading, writing, talking and story telling. Parents will learn fun and creative ways to model to their children.
