Cork's Café Gold Remembers
The Gold Cafe, a vibrant group within Cork's Gay Project community, meets every Friday from noon to 3 PM. Comprised of men over 55, they share their experiences of being gay before decriminalization in Ireland. This dynamic group is eager to explore their memories through poetry, stories, and text, reflecting on their varied interests, both political and personal.
Over five sessions spanning three months, poet Jennifer Horgan will join their Friday gatherings to facilitate workshops that use physical activities to foster learning and trust. With literacy levels varying, Jennifer will employ tactile methods like collage and word tiles to encourage expression. As a writer and poet, she will help shape their material, ensuring they remain in control of their narratives.
The project aims to produce audio, visual, and text-based accounts of their stories, which will be displayed in their new permanent home in Cork City. This initiative not only celebrates their heritage but also educates younger members of the Gay Project. By sharing their stories publicly, we hope to foster compassion and support for Ireland's continued development as a liberal, accepting country.
