Cork’s Historic Past Augmented Reality App

The Cork's historic past augmented reality app will creatively engage people in Cork’s built heritage and archaeology. Innovative digital interpretation will help bring Cork’s past to life and enhance people’s understanding of Cork’s heritage and past. The app will be available to all to download free of charge and will create new ways to understand the city and is history.

A series of markers will be located in the city centre, focussing on a number of  historic streetscapes and buildings centred around St. Patrick's St. When users scan the marker, it will open up on their phone an image of how that street, building etc looked in the previous century.  Archival photos or paintings and old film footage will be layered onto the current image from the same vantage point allowing users to travel back in time and see the site as it was and how it has changed.

The project is intended to be phase one of a new collaboration between Cork City Council and UCC, which will see the app extended to other historical sites and uses.
