Echoes of the Ancient World: Cunieform Tablets and lanterns

“Echoes of the Ancient World,” brings together Professor Martin Worthington, a leading expert in Assyrian culture, and local artists and facilitators to create an immersive, hands-on exploration of ancient history through the creation of cuneiform tablets. First Martin Worthington and his assistants will give a workshop using play dough and traditional stylus pens to create practice pieces of cuneiform tablets then twenty local people, a mixture of local artists and history enthusiasts (from local history groups), will work with Doirin Saurus, a Tipperary-based ceramic artist. Using traditional clay and inscription methods, participants will learn about Assyrian culture, its written language, and artistic practices, while creating their own cuneiform-inspired pieces. The workshops will take place in Spafield Resource Centre. We will also work with students of Martin Worthington from Trinity College. They, alongside local artist and arts facilitator Lisa Manton, will work with first years in Cashel Community School. They will learn about the history and art of ancient Assyria and use the knowledge to create their own cuneiform tile. These will be provided by The Lodge pottery painting, along with paints and brushes. They will then be taken and fired back at The Lodge, Ballyowen. Our aim is that both the clay tablets and the tiles will be mounted on a wall in Cashel preserving the project much in the way that cuneiform tablets were preserved into present day.
