Galway's Great Read: Eilís Dillon; Cuimhní Clainne / Family Memories

As part of 'Galway's Great Read 2020', Galway Public Libraries has commissioned visual artist Ruth O'Donnell to create a new unique artwork to commemorate and celebrate the life and work of one of the West of Ireland’s most versatile writers, Eilís Dillon, in the centenary year of her birth.

Eilís Dillon’s lineage is steeped in history, literature and art. Members of Eilís’s family, namely her son Cormac Ó Cuilleanáin, daughter Eiléan Ní Chuilleanáin and granddaughter Léan Ní Chuilleanáin, will be invited by the artist to share their memories of and perspectives on Eilís and her work. Collaboration with Dillon's family was a central aspect of this work, exploring family memories of their mother/grandmother, her contribution to the canon of Irish literature and the prominent role she played in Irish culture, which informed and inspired the creation of this commissioned piece launched on 17th December 2020.
