Explore your Monument

Did you know that County Offaly has a wide range of recorded monuments with over 4000 sites?  An open call for expressions of interest is being issued to invite communities to work with the archaeologists in the Irish Heritage School to explore and get to know their local monuments.  The project will be led by the Irish Heritage School – a public archaeology and heritage educational firm based in Birr.  They are inviting local communities to apply for a series of specialist led workshops this autumn that will allow communities to explore their local monument in a deeper, experiential, and ultimately more rewarding way. The scheme aims to explore Offaly monuments with a ‘local significance’ and so is equally applicable to monasteries, castles, limekilns, traditional houses, holy wells, ringforts etc. The scheme not only assesses these monuments but also potentially explores local folklore, history and objects that are associated with them. What is crucial however, is that there is a strong local appetite to further explore and understand the site. More details will follow as the project progresses.
